Ally Week: 4/16-4/20

Ally Week is a week-long initiative that seeks to reach out to the entire UCLA community in an effort to spread awareness, education, and information about the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender communities and what it means to support the LGBT community. Each of Ally Week’s events and programs is heavily focused on exposing students to the information and tools necessary to actively participate as an “ally” to members of the LGBT community. We hope that all participants leave Ally Week with a better understanding of their fellow Bruins and a will to support and ultimately love all members of our campus community.

The Ally Week mission is multi-faceted, addressing issues specific to UCLA and making a public testament to the world of UCLA’s commitment to inclusivity, support, and ultimately love.

Goals:
1. Internal
-Working to ensure that LGBT students are appreciated by the university, supported by the university, and are visible in all walks of life here at UCLA.
-Working to secure and develop allies to the LGBT community. Promoting dialogue and striving to build a community who can stand together in its diversity.
-Establishing UCLA as a safe space for all peoples: where students, faculty, and staff understand that our university is a place that is understanding, welcoming, and safe for its’ inhabitants.

2. External
-Making it public to the world that UCLA is a place committed to promoting diversity in all its aspects and celebrating all identities.
-Making a public commitment in striving to build a university that is inclusive, committed to the physical safety and emotional wellness of its’: students, faculty, and staff, and therefore taking a stance against injustice and violence.
-Bringing awareness to the world that UCLA is a safe place and welcoming to the LGBT community.

Please join us during the week of April 16th-20th, 2012. This initiative is educational in nature, and each day will focus on informing the student body about a particular theme and hard to reach community.
